Coordinated excitatory and inhibitory activity is required for proper brain functioning. Recent computational experimental studies have demonstrated that patterns in recurrent cortical networks are dominated by inhibition. Whereas previous suggested plasticity important homeostatic control, this new framework puts inhibition the driver’s seat.
